An autumn ride can be rewarding, but road conditions can change through the day. Cooler air may lower tire pressure, and tires can take longer to warm up. Before leaving, inspect the motorcycle and set tire pressure to the manufacturer’s recommendation. Dress for the colder end of the trip, not only the warmest hour.
Wet leaves, gravel and other debris deserve special attention. Slow down before reaching them and avoid abrupt braking, acceleration or steering. Around wooded roads and at dusk, scan ahead for animals as well: one crossing may be followed by another.
Shorter days also mean more riding in poor light. Light-colored or reflective gear helps others see the rider. Drivers can do their part by leaving more space and checking mirrors and blind spots again before turning or changing lanes. In autumn, a safer margin comes from spotting a hazard early and responding smoothly.
