Between Sarajevo and Pale in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a former narrow-gauge railway corridor has gained a new role as a cycle trail. The roughly 13-kilometre section follows the Miljacka and Paljanska Miljacka rivers below Mount Trebević. It links the city with a wooded valley by reusing a historic alignment.
The works restored nine tunnels, added solar-powered tunnel lighting, built two bridges and a bypass section, and installed signs and protective barriers. The project describes an average gradient of 2.5–3.5%, with the route designed for riders of varied experience.
The trail starts at Sarajevo City Hall, passes through the Dariva pedestrian zone and joins the former railway near Vrelo Života, ending close to the old Pale station. At its opening, cycling clubs rode from opposite ends to meet on the route. That gesture reflects the project’s wider purpose: turning inherited infrastructure into a shared space for travel and recreation.
