Saulkrasti Bicycle Museum grew from the collection of Jānis and Guntis Seregins. Collecting began in 1977, when Jānis turned to researching Latvia’s bicycle industry and the beginnings of cycling in the country.
Exhibits include a Safety bicycle made at the Leutner factory in 1888 and a wooden bicycle designed by Kārlis Irbītis in VEF’s sports-aircraft workshop in 1940. Manufacturer badges and objects connected with cycling clubs and sport accompany the bicycles.
It is worth looking closely at details: frame construction, saddle position and the maker’s badge. They offer a way to compare how different periods understood a comfortable, durable and recognisable bicycle.
The museum is at Rīgas iela 44a, Saulkrasti. Arrange an autumn visit in advance and confirm the time before travelling: outside the summer season, visits are by prior arrangement.
