PE teacher Sam Balto started his first Portland bike bus in 2022 with roughly five to ten pupils. His central lesson is that a shared school ride needs consistency more than a large turnout. The morning journey becomes a repeatable habit.
Balto is co-founder and executive director of Bike Bus World. The organisation helps communities establish rides by providing organisers with tools and guidance. Its work also includes support for better active travel infrastructure and policy, alongside efforts to secure funding at local and national levels.
The practical guidance begins with a small organising team and a manageable route. Adults agree beforehand who rides at the front and rear and who helps when someone stops. Families need a meeting point and departure time; arrangements for poor weather should also be discussed in advance.
This offers a useful way to think about everyday organisation: a ride has a future when responsibilities are shared and the plan is clear. Each place needs its own solution, shaped by the actual route and people riding together, even when the inspiration comes from elsewhere.
