A bike bus is a shared ride to school: children pedal while adults accompany the group. An agreed route and meeting points let families join along the way. The format turns an everyday school journey into something riders do together.

Glasgow’s Shawlands Bike Bus runs on Mondays and Fridays during term time. An adult at the front sets the pace, while another at the back makes sure nobody falls behind. In adverse weather, organisers may switch to a walking bus.

The initiative also has a bicycle loan library for Shawlands Primary families. Its offer includes children’s and adult bikes, a folding bike and an electric cargo bike, alongside helmets, lights and locks. Borrowing a particular cycle depends on availability; access to a loan bike provides a way to explore cycling before buying one.

Running the group also requires shared responsibilities. Bikeability’s bike bus resources cover team building, route planning, risk assessment and communication with families. The Shawlands example brings these elements together through regular cooperation: a school route, adult support and access to bicycles.
