Shimano Nexus city-bike components arrived in 1994. The idea extended beyond the geared hub: shifting, braking and lighting were developed around everyday use.
An enclosed mechanism still needs care. Shimano’s user manual advises easing pedal pressure when shifting and keeping high-pressure water away from the hub.

For hubs other than the 11-speed design, the manual recommends annual internal lubrication, or roughly every 2,000 km with frequent use. Harsh conditions require shorter intervals; confirm your model’s requirements with a workshop.
