Motorcyclists planning an Austrian Alpine journey need to remove the Silvretta High Alpine Road from their list of through passes for now. The road normally links Partenen in Vorarlberg with Galtür in Tyrol, climbing to the 2,032-metre Bielerhöhe over a 22.3-kilometre route with 34 hairpin bends. Its compact length, mountain views and lakeside sections have long made it attractive to riders. A complete ride from one valley to the other is currently unavailable.

Rockfalls and mudslides in summer 2024 led to a safety closure. A further incident in July 2025 and geological assessment showed that short-term measures would not be enough. The longer plan calls for road diversions and protective barriers at several points. Construction seasons are scheduled from 2027 through 2029, with reopening to public through traffic envisaged for summer 2030.

Access to parts of the area is different from an open pass. A partial approach from the Tyrolean side remains possible as far as Vermuntsee, while the Vermuntbahn cable car provides summer access to Bielerhöhe from Vorarlberg. A winter closure is listed from 27 October 2026. Check current road notices and choose another route between the valleys before setting out; cable-car access to the summit does not mean the mountain road is open for through traffic.
