Norway’s Sognefjellet Scenic Route follows Road 55 from Lom to Gaupne. From the green Bøverdalen valley it climbs to 1,434 metres above sea level before descending towards Sognefjorden. That change of landscape gives a motorcycle journey here its character.
Allow time for Mefjellet rest area at the Storevasskrysset crossroads on the mountain plateau. It overlooks the Fannaråken glacier and surrounding peaks, with Knut Wold’s stone sculpture standing in the landscape. This is a stop to park the motorcycle and see the mountains beyond the frame of a visor.
Treat the crossing as seasonal. The mountain section between Rustasætre/Vegaskjelet and Turtagrø closes in winter; even after reopening in spring, night-time or bad-weather closures are possible. Check current traffic notices before setting out. A short distance on the map does not guarantee that the pass will be available on your chosen day.
