Garmin introduced the Tacx Nēra on 20 October. It is a smart indoor trainer that takes the place of a bicycle’s rear wheel. Its distinguishing feature is a set of built-in motion supports that allow the bike to move slightly forward, backward and sideways while the rider pedals. The aim is a more natural feeling when autumn and winter sessions move indoors.

According to the manufacturer, power and cadence measurements are accurate within one percent. The trainer can simulate gradients of up to 20 percent and accommodate sprint efforts of up to 2,200 watts. These are the company’s stated specifications, rather than the result of an independent comparison, so they are best read as a description of the product’s intended performance.

Buyers can choose a model with a cassette already installed or a version equipped with Zwift Cog and Click for virtual shifting. Built-in Wi-Fi connects the trainer to compatible virtual riding platforms. The useful choice depends on the drivetrain of the rider’s bicycle and the training software they use; axle, gear and application compatibility deserve a check before purchase. The broader change is that indoor trainers are being designed around movement and easier setup as well as resistance.
