Before washing a textile motorcycle jacket, read the care labels on both the outer garment and detachable liners: their instructions may differ. Remove the intended removable protectors and liners, then close zips and hook-and-loop fasteners. Care starts with understanding the jacket’s construction before it reaches the washing machine.

Durable water repellent treatment, or DWR, acts on the outer fabric, making droplets bead and run off. It is distinct from the waterproof membrane itself. If the face fabric becomes saturated, a jacket can feel cold and clammy even when the membrane is not letting water through.

GORE-TEX outerwear instructions call for a small amount of liquid detergent and a double rinse, without fabric softener, powder or bleach. Choose drying and any heat treatment only as permitted by the jacket’s label. Not every model can be tumble-dried; renew DWR with a compatible product when needed.

Renewing water repellency does not replace repairing damage. If fabric is torn or you are uncertain about the jacket’s condition, consult its manufacturer or a suitable repair specialist. Before the next ride, return the protectors to their intended pockets and check their position.
