Romania’s Transfăgărășan, the DN7C, links Transylvania and Wallachia across the Făgăraș Mountains. Near Bâlea Lake the road reaches about 2,042 metres. For a motorcyclist, the route calls for constant attention to the terrain: the panorama draws the eye outward, while the next bend demands focus.
Bâlea Lake is a natural stop near the high point, while Vidraru Lake and its dam offer a different landscape to the south. It makes sense to plan time for stops instead of treating the road as a quick connection between regions. Mountain weather and visibility can change the rhythm of a day, so a flexible schedule matters as much as the route itself.
The season cannot be taken for granted. A high-altitude section closes in winter and spring because of avalanche, rockfall and other hazards; opening and closing dates depend on conditions each year. Check current road restrictions and the forecast before setting off, particularly if you intend to cross the full mountain section.
