The EuroVelo and Cycling Tourism Conference brought more than 220 delegates from 37 countries to Utrecht from 30 September to 2 October. Discussion went beyond individual cycle paths to the network that lets a traveller continue across city and regional boundaries.
The Dutch experience highlights the value of routes that join up. Speakers also stressed cooperation between local authorities, tourism organisations and transport planners. An example from north-eastern Italy showed how local and regional paths can connect with neighbouring countries and other modes of travel.
Delegates explored routes around Utrecht in person, including a 23-kilometre cycle route between Utrecht and Amersfoort. For a traveller, a beautiful stretch on a map matters most when it connects clearly to the next leg, transport and places to stop.
