Vänerleden forms an approximately 640 km loop around Vänern, Sweden’s largest lake. Divided into four main stages, it also lends itself to a shorter trip. One option is the roughly 68 km section from Mariestad to Lidköping.
This section mainly follows lightly trafficked roads, with some gravel and only a few completely car-free stretches. Start at Mariestad’s guest harbour and pause at the Falkängen craft village in Hällekis. Leave time for the Kinnekulle quarry as well.
Stora Stenbrottet is a 40-metre-deep former limestone quarry containing a small lake. Its exposed rock shows layers of different colours; the oldest lower limestone layers reach back around 400 million years. This is a stop worth allowing more than a quick photograph.
When planning the day, budget separately for riding and sightseeing. Check the current route map, accommodation and attraction opening times, and arrangements for returning to your starting point. A bicycle suited to gravel sections and luggage will help make the journey more comfortable.
