La Vélo Francette links Ouistreham in Normandy with La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast. The roughly 600-kilometre signposted route follows the Mayenne, Loire and Thouet before crossing the Marais Poitevin wetlands.
For a shorter outing, consider the 36 kilometres from Mayenne to Laval. Much of this stage follows the river towpath. The official description lists 93% as cycleway, but also classifies 93% of the surface as rough. Set your pace for the surface and leave room for lock houses and town stops.
The 21 kilometres from Saumur to Montreuil-Bellay have a different character: a greenway beside the Thouet gives way to farm tracks and small shared roads. Check the current route and diversions before setting off, particularly around Saumur, where the stage description flags bridge works. A single route name does not guarantee a uniform riding surface.
