Torque describes the turning effect of a force and is often specified for bicycle components in newton metres, or Nm. Excessive tightening can damage threads or parts, while an inadequately tightened joint can loosen during use.
Find the required value on the component or in the exact model’s instructions. Different fasteners require different values; do not borrow a figure from another part. If the specification or a suitable tool is unavailable, have a bicycle workshop do the job.
A torque wrench measures resistance to rotation, but cannot correct assembly errors. A cross-threaded bolt does not become correctly installed just because the tool reaches its setting. Follow the manufacturer’s requirements for thread preparation too.
Use the tool within its specified measuring range. Stop at its torque indication, store it carefully and follow the maker’s accuracy-check schedule.
