Cycle speedway packs the tension of racing into less than a minute. A typical heat sends four riders from a standing start into four anticlockwise laps. The short oval generally measures around 70–90 metres in circumference, allowing spectators to follow almost the entire contest from one spot.

The bicycle is deliberately simple: a light frame, a short wheelbase and one gear with a freewheel. Racing bicycles in this discipline have no brakes. Acceleration off the line, cornering and positioning matter alongside the ability to repeat the sprint across several heats. These are specialist machines built for the track.

The British tradition began in 1946, when youngsters made rough tracks on bomb sites and raced stripped-down old bicycles. During the winter of 2025/26, the community established an independent Cycle Speedway Federation. Its emphasis is on accessible club sport and local participation.

Team formats add another layer to a heat: in pairs racing, each of two teams fields two riders. To try the discipline, contact a club first; many can lend a bicycle. Before the first session, check requirements for a helmet, gloves and clothing that covers the body from the neck down.
