The Mid Wales Loop covers around 140 miles, or 226 kilometres, on quieter roads through the heart of Wales. It runs through Rhayader, the Elan Valley and the Cambrian Mountains before returning via Llanidloes. It is a moderately difficult, full-day ride. The appeal lies in its changing landscape and steady rhythm rather than in reaching a destination quickly.
The route combines A and B roads with stretches beside reservoirs. The Claerwen dam and reservoir are a notable stop in the Elan Valley, offering a chance to pause and take in the terrain before continuing into more open mountain country. Allowing time for stops makes the journey more rewarding: the scenery changes over a relatively short distance, and the full loop is long enough to deserve a relaxed schedule.
Fuel is less readily available on the remote sections, so filling up in towns such as Rhayader, Aberystwyth or Machynlleth is sensible. Before setting off, check the weather and remember that a narrow country road may be wet or carry loose gravel. A measured pace and a few planned breaks are more useful on this ride than trying to cover all 140 miles without stopping.
