The road over the 1,611-metre Vršič pass connects Kranjska Gora with Bovec through the Trenta valley. Its 50 hairpins wind through forests and mountain scenery in the Julian Alps. Snow can close the pass, so check whether the route is open before setting off.
On the northern slope, the Russian Chapel is a wooden memorial to Russian prisoners of war from the First World War. Stopping here adds historical perspective to the ride: this mountain road also bears witness to the lives of the people who built it.
New summit parking arrangements took effect in September 2026, providing 24 motorcycle spaces. Parking is free until the end of the year. At the barriers, the right lane serves summit parking; the left is for through traffic and other destinations. Follow the signs and space-availability information.
Allow separate time for riding and stopping: enjoy the views once the motorcycle is safely parked. In changeable mountain weather, a shorter daily plan leaves more room to adapt.
