In southeast Ireland, the Waterford Greenway links Waterford with Dungarvan. The roughly 46-kilometre walking and cycling route follows a former railway, bringing railway heritage and the coast into the same ride.
There are eleven bridges, three viaducts and the 400-metre Ballyvoyle Tunnel near Durrow. A smooth surface leaves room to enjoy the changing surroundings, from river views through countryside towards Dungarvan Bay. Slow down at the tunnel entrances, where visitor traffic can be busy.
You need not ride the entire route. Bike hire is available in Waterford, Kilmacthomas and Dungarvan; choosing a shorter section leaves more time for stops. Confirm rental arrangements and plan your return before setting off, especially for a one-way ride.
Walkers and cyclists share the trail. Keep left, pass on the right, ring your bell early and leave plenty of space. An unhurried pace helps turn this former transport corridor into a destination in its own right.
