Yamaha Y-AMT automates clutch operation and gear changes. Actuators perform the movements a rider normally makes with the left hand and foot.
The system retains the basis of a manual gearbox, but removes the clutch lever and gear pedal. In MT mode, a handlebar control selects the gear; in AT mode, electronics make that choice.
Automatic operation offers two programmes: D favours gentler shifts at lower engine speeds, while D+ holds gears longer and changes up at higher revs.
For the rider, this creates a choice of habits: decide each shift personally or delegate it to the system. Both modes deserve attention when getting acquainted with this type of motorcycle.
