Sweden’s Blue Highway, or Blå Vägen, is the E12 stretch from the Norwegian border near Högstaby to Holmsund by Umeå. The Swedish section covers roughly 460 kilometres. For a motorcycle tour, the appeal lies in the changing landscape: mountains in the west, the Ume River valley farther east and the Gulf of Bothnia coast at the end. The distance can be covered in a day, but the stops deserve more time.
Around Hemavan, the road begins in mountain country. Heading east, riders can pause near the Vindelfjällen protected area and Storuman, then explore Sámi heritage at the historic Gammplatsen site in Lycksele. The route continues via Vännäs to Umeå, where the city’s museums offer a different finish from the mountain views at the start.
This is a northern route, so a motorcycle trip should be planned around the season and current road conditions; snow can linger near the mountains into late spring. Sweden’s tourism office also urges drivers to watch for reindeer crossing the road. A rewarding pace leaves room for riverside stops and small towns instead of treating 460 kilometres as a race against the clock.
