The Altmühltal-Radweg runs from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Kelheim on the Danube. The full mapped route measures approximately 244 kilometres. It passes Gunzenhausen, Treuchtlingen, Eichstätt and Beilngries, combining asphalt with gravel and compacted mineral surfaces. Much of the route is away from motor traffic.
A river route does not mean a completely flat ride: the opening section through the Frankenhöhe includes more demanding climbs. From Rothenburg, the route passes Windelsbach, Colmberg and Leutershausen towards Gunzenhausen. The Altmühlsee bird island and Eichstätt’s Residenzplatz deserve time beyond the daily riding schedule.
Near Riedenburg, Prunn Castle stands above the valley. A manuscript of the Nibelungenlied was discovered there, and its exhibition connects the epic with castle life. The access road is steep; cyclists can lock their bikes in the valley and walk up. Treat this visit as a separate addition to the ride.
For a shorter journey, start in Gunzenhausen: approximately 166 kilometres remain to Kelheim through the nature park. Cliffs, juniper heath and riverside meadows characterise this section. At Kelheim, the route connects with the Danube Cycle Path, allowing the journey to continue towards Regensburg.
