Introduced in 1976, the BMW R 100 RS wore a full fairing mounted to its frame. Pininfarina refined its aerodynamics in the wind tunnel. The design sought to combine sporty riding with protection from wind and weather on longer journeys.
Its ABS plastic panels incorporated the headlight and indicators, with openings for the boxer engine’s cylinders. Bodywork thus brought lighting, engine layout and rider protection into one composition. A long two-person seat and side-case mounting points also served the touring brief.
Today, the motorcycle offers an interesting example of practical needs becoming recognisable form. The fairing is more than a component ahead of the engine: it defines the silhouette and the motorcycle’s relationship with its rider.
