In 1973, the BMW R 90 S became the flagship of the /6 range. Hans Muth expressed its sporting ambition through a handlebar-mounted cockpit fairing, flowing fuel-tank contours and a distinctive seat. Together, these details gave the motorcycle a coherent silhouette.
Colour played an equally visible role. Daytona Orange joined Silver Smoke Metallic in 1975. The smoky transitions helped the motorcycle stand out at a time when performance and appearance were becoming increasingly important to riders.
The sporting image had mechanical substance: an 898 cc boxer engine delivered 67 hp, supported by twin front brake discs. The R 90 S remains an interesting design study today: a compact fairing and carefully considered proportions can communicate a motorcycle’s purpose clearly.
