A bicycle does not stand for just one way of life. A London exhibition held in 2015–2016 explored cycling through four groups: high performers, thrill seekers, urban riders and cargo bikers. The categories invite a comparison not only of bicycle shapes, but of the reasons people ride.
A racing bicycle puts speed and precision first; a trail bicycle must stay controllable on rough ground. In town, frequent stops, carrying belongings and everyday comfort matter, while a cargo bicycle can take over some short transport jobs. The same basic pedal-powered idea serves four very different purposes.
The exhibition also featured British bespoke frame builders, whose work shows how geometry and equipment can be tailored to an individual rider. Taken together, these examples suggest that there is no single best bicycle for everyone: the useful choice depends on the ride it needs to make.
