Copenhagen’s Cykelslangen, or Bicycle Snake, opened in 2014. Designed by Dissing+Weitling, the 230-metre bridge near Fisketorvet lifts cyclists above the waterfront on gentle curves. Its value lies in an effective connection as well as a distinctive silhouette.
Previously, some riders travelling from Dybbølsbro towards Bryggebroen had to dismount and carry their bicycles down steps. The connection lets them keep riding, while pedestrians can use the waterfront beneath without crossing the cycle flow.
The slender steel structure and flowing bends turn infrastructure into a recognisable part of the city. In our view, the project’s central lesson is route continuity: a good cycling connection removes an awkward break while also considering the people who travel on foot.
