Susanne Bednarik and Thomas Drescher set out from Austria for Rome on loaded gravel bikes in the summer of 2026. Their journey linked several routes: EuroVelo 9 and EuroVelo 14 first, then EuroVelo 7 through Austria and Italy. It was never simply one uninterrupted line to follow on a map.
Alpine climbs proved harder than expected, while thunderstorms repeatedly changed the day’s plans. Between Bolzano and Avio, the pair enjoyed the Adige valley scenery and a good cycle path, though fatigue and knee pain called for more breaks. Signs became less clear near Mantua; a puncture and mounting discomfort later prompted a rest day in Bologna.
Their account shows that distance is only one measure of a long bicycle trip. Weather, climbing, mechanical trouble and the riders’ energy all shape the pace. Leaving room for a rest day and adjusting overnight stops can make the journey more enjoyable.
