The GSX1100S Katana design appeared in Cologne in 1980, with production following in 1981. Developed from the GSX1100E, it combined a 1074 cc air-cooled four-cylinder engine with sharp lines inspired by a Japanese sword. Its distinctive instruments and seat finish added further character.
Suzuki unveiled the new Katana at INTERMOT in 2018. The next generation paired its proportions with an LED headlight and a rear fender attached to the swingarm. Positioning the number-plate holder and indicators lower helped create a compact tail. Its equipment included ABS, traction control and an upside-down front fork.
This continuity offers a design lesson: recognition comes from the relationship between the nose, tank and seat. When comparing generations, look at the silhouette and transitions between surfaces. They reveal where the original idea continues and where the engineering takes on a new visual expression.
