San Francisco’s Bike Kitchen has operated as a volunteer-run nonprofit since 2003. Its purpose is to help people of different ages and backgrounds learn bicycle repair. Mutual respect and a willingness to share knowledge are central to the workshop’s culture.

A day visit costs US$5, while annual membership can be bought for $40 or earned through six hours of volunteering. Membership provides access to tools and mechanics’ help during opening hours. A separate programme lets members assemble a bicycle from the workshop’s stock of used frames and parts; participation must be paid for or earned separately.

No previous experience is required for the practical classes. The basic course covers tubes, tyres and cables, brake and gear adjustment, and chain care. There are also classes on bearing maintenance and wheelbuilding. This kind of setting can make a first repair less intimidating: someone is nearby to answer questions, while the rider takes the new skills home.
