The BMW K 1200 S, unveiled in 2004, introduced Duolever front suspension. Two almost parallel longitudinal links connect the frame to a rigid wheel carrier. Pivoting joints define its suspension travel.

A central spring-and-damper unit is supported against the frame and connected to the lower link. A scissor-type linkage transmits steering input. It helps to consider two tasks separately: the wheel must follow bumps in the road while the rider remains able to turn it.

The K 1300 S developed the arrangement further: a forged light-alloy lower link replaced the steel component, reducing unsprung mass by roughly one kilogram. The suspension geometry also limits brake dive, although load transfer between the wheels still affects the motorcycle’s movement.

The display assembly in the photograph lets you trace both the suspension links and the steering connections. This view helps explain how Duolever works: one front wheel uses distinct mechanisms to guide vertical travel, absorb bumps and steer.
