In 1977, Joe Breeze built Breezer #1, one of the early bicycles designed specifically for mountain riding. The old frames ridden in Marin were heavy and prone to breaking. His response was a purpose-built chromoly steel frame; he rode the first Breezer to victory at Repack.
His work extended beyond framebuilding. With Josh Angell, Breeze developed the Hite-Rite saddle-height adjustment device. Everyday transport later became a central concern: in 2002, Breezer focused on fully equipped bicycles for commuting, shopping and connecting with public transport.
A unifying principle emerges from that journey: design begins with a rider’s need. On a mountain trail, that means durability and control; on an everyday route, carrying belongings comfortably and being ready to leave. Breeze’s story also invites us to judge a bicycle by how well it fits our own lives.
