In 1969 Kawasaki introduced the H1, a roughly 500cc three-cylinder two-stroke. Also known as the Mach III, it helped strengthen the company’s position in the US market. Its asymmetric exhaust arrangement became a distinctive detail: two silencers on the right and one on the left.

The air-cooled engine produced 60 bhp. Electronic ignition helped reduce spark-plug fouling at low speeds. Fierce acceleration shaped the H1’s character, while its handling also demanded attention; Kawasaki progressively refined the motorcycle over its production life.

The US launch price was $999. Drag racer and development rider Tony Nicosia completed a quarter mile on an H1 in 12.96 seconds. Early versions used drum brakes, while the 1976 KH500 had a front disc brake. That final model closed an eight-year production chapter for the H1 family.
