The same motorcycle behaves differently with two people and touring luggage than it does on a short solo ride. Extra weight changes the demands on the tyres, suspension and brakes. ADAC advises carrying out the technical inspection for a major trip early enough to fix any faults before departure. Start with the motorcycle’s permitted gross weight and compare it with the planned load, including rider, passenger and bags.
Tyres need to last the whole itinerary, not only the first day. Assess the remaining tread and set pressure according to the manufacturer’s instructions for the heavier load. Inspect brake pads and suspension seals; additional weight and winding roads can change how hard these parts work. On a chain-driven bike, assess chain condition and adjustment with the loaded suspension in mind. Where adjustment is available, set suspension preload and damping in line with the motorcycle’s handbook.
Touring luggage is part of the motorcycle’s handling. Check the mounts of cases and bags before starting so nothing can shift or touch the wheel or exhaust. A loaded bike may also change the headlight beam angle; adjust it to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic. Finally, a short ride with the intended full load before setting out helps reveal how the motorcycle brakes, turns and holds its line. It is easier to resolve a problem at home than to find a workshop halfway through a journey.
