Norton’s factory racers adopted the Featherbed frame in 1950. Designed by the McCandless brothers in Belfast, it used Reynolds 531 steel tubing. That season brought Geoff Duke victory in the Senior TT and Artie Bell a win in the Junior TT.
The Manx evolved in stages. Double overhead camshafts became standard on production racers in 1949. The new frame was announced for these machines in autumn 1950 and reached private riders in spring 1951, bringing another factory development into the machines they could buy.
This sequence offers a way to read Manx history through the development of engine and chassis together. When looking at a historic motorcycle, its frame and particular year deserve attention too: a model name alone does not tell the whole engineering story.
