The most powerful motor is not always the most useful choice for an everyday city e-bike. Shimano’s EP5 mid-drive delivers 60 Nm of torque, sitting between the company’s EP8 and EP6 units, which reach up to 85 Nm, and the gentler E5100 at up to 50 Nm. That positioning explains its purpose: assistance for pulling away from traffic lights and climbing hills, with a character aimed at urban rides rather than maximum output.

Riders can tune the EP5 assistance to respond more strongly or more gently. When paired with compatible Inter-5e or Di2 internal geared hubs, the system can also use AUTO SHIFT. It reads speed, cadence and torque to select a suitable gear without a manual shift. In stop-start traffic, that can make repeated starts less demanding and leave the rider with one fewer action to manage while paying attention to the road.

Shimano’s E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist app lets owners adjust both the assistance character and the timing of automatic shifts. A buyer should still consider the complete bicycle rather than the motor name alone. The gearbox must be compatible for automatic shifting to be available, while the battery, tyres and riding habits will shape the day-to-day experience. The EP5’s appeal is its balance of useful torque and adjustability for ordinary journeys.
