In the Suzuki GSX-R1000 engine, SR-VVT changes intake camshaft timing according to engine speed. Its purpose is to strengthen high-rpm power while preserving output lower down and through the middle of the rev range.

The mechanism sits in the intake cam sprocket and an adjacent guide plate. Twelve steel balls travel between angled grooves in the sprocket and straight grooves in the plate. At high rpm, centrifugal force pushes the balls outwards; the groove geometry changes the relative angle of sprocket and camshaft, moving intake valve events later.

This principle remains in the 2026 GSX-R1000R update. The engine also received new camshafts, reshaped finger followers and a wider cam chain.

Maximum valve lift remained unchanged, while valve overlap was reduced to help meet emissions requirements. This illustrates two different design parameters: how far a valve opens and when that happens within the engine cycle. SR-VVT works on the latter.
