The Ténéré story began with races that demanded long distances over difficult ground. After the XT500’s success in the early Paris–Dakar rallies, the idea was to carry some of that experience into a motorcycle people could buy and use on ordinary roads. The XT600 Ténéré was first shown at the Paris Motorcycle Show in autumn 1982 and reached the market in 1983.

The production model had a 600cc single-cylinder engine, a 30-litre fuel tank and the first front disc brake fitted to a Yamaha off-road model. Its large tank and tall riding position recalled rally machinery, while its dimensions were also intended for public roads. That link between long-distance ambition and everyday use helped shape the image of the adventure motorcycle.

Yamaha sold 61,000 XT600 Ténéré motorcycles in Europe during the model’s first ten years. The family later developed in other directions, including the larger twin-cylinder Super Ténéré. The original model’s significance is straightforward: it gave ordinary riders a machine whose form and capabilities drew on the long rally, rather than only the city street.
