Yamaha Motor plans to replace virgin aluminium with a recycled alloy in its DiASil engine cylinders. DiASil is an all-aluminium cylinder design without an iron sleeve or plating, used across a range of Yamaha motorcycles and scooters.

Impurities in conventional recycled aluminium had made it difficult to meet the cylinder’s requirements for metal structure, surface properties and corrosion resistance. Yamaha says the new alloy passed bench and vehicle evaluations and can be used with existing production processes. The first application will be on commuter models built in Indonesia, with a wider rollout planned later.

The potential emissions benefit depends on how far the change spreads. Yamaha estimates that switching every DiASil-equipped product by 2030 could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 47,000 tonnes a year. That is a projection for a completed rollout, not a saving already achieved. The development highlights how material choices in a small engine component can matter when repeated across many vehicles.
