The Yamaha MT-01 first appeared as a concept at the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show and reached Europe in 2005. Its central idea was Kodo: the engine’s pulse as something the rider could feel as well as hear.

In the production model, a 1,670cc air-cooled V-twin was rigidly mounted in an aluminium frame and contributed to its structural strength. The frame and seat were visually arranged around the large power unit, giving the engine a commanding presence in the motorcycle’s silhouette.

The high underseat silencers belonged to the same design idea. Their outlets were placed close to the rider to make the exhaust rhythm more audible. Exposed mechanical parts helped make the relationship between intake, engine and exhaust visible.

The MT-01 can be read as an example of one riding sensation shaping an entire motorcycle’s composition. Engine size, frame lines and exhaust placement work together to express a machine whose main visual subject is its own mechanics.
