Presented in 2017, the Yamaha Niken has two front wheels yet leans into corners like a motorcycle. A parallelogram linkage forms the basis of its front suspension and steering layout. Outside-mounted forks and dedicated steering geometry allow the original design to reach a 45-degree lean angle.
Behind that unusual front end is familiar machinery: the original Niken uses an MT-09-derived 847cc inline triple, a six-speed gearbox and chain drive to the rear wheel. ABS, traction control and cruise control are also part of its equipment.
Yamaha links the twin front wheels to grip and greater cornering confidence. The interesting engineering question is how two tyres can follow the rider’s chosen direction while the whole machine leans. Seen that way, the Niken offers a clear example of how suspension and steering design can reshape a motorcycle’s character.
